This concert juxtaposes works from two very different musical perspectives — the classical weight and proportions of Mozart’s final symphony, from 1788, with the romantic rhythms and suffused colorings of Ravel’s greatest ballet score, from 1914. Ravel’s magical orchestration, with its wordless chorus, subliminal sensuality, and sparkling effervescence, imparts poetic longing to the pastoral story — and legendary romance — of the shepherd and shepherdess Daphnis and Chloé.
