KISS a study in why revolving door bands should not be in the Rock Hall

Kiss_the_MidgetsIf anyone has been following the KISS debacle on the internet I really don’t blame them.  They haven’t been remotely relevant in a couple decades.  However rabid fans continue to worship at their alter of over the top manufactured rock.  So much so, as a matter of fact, they were somehow inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.  They will be in the company of the best of the best and the cream of the crop of rock and roll.  I can’t deny they are influential.  KISS spawned other manufactured pop groups like the Spice Girls and the Backstreet Boys.  Find a formula, milk it for all that its worth and then bow out gracefully.  Unfortunately KISS never learned that last part and have continued to put out marginal album after marginal album for decades.

It’s been back and forth with them “We won’t play with Ace and Peter”, “We won’t play because the Rock Hall sucks”.  They really can’t make up their minds on what the real reason is.  The one person losing out the most is The Ankh Warrior Vinnie Vincent.  Everyone is fighting over the Spaceman and The Catman, but what about poor Vinnie?  Maybe he is the one making out being left out of the picture here.

What this boils down to is what KISS are they nominating?  The current line up, which is a cover band for the everything pre mid-80’s as they haven’t put out a decent record since about that time, or the original line up with the accessible metal favorites everyone has grown to love?  I think the answer here is obvious.  No one, not even the Gene or Paul gives a rats ass about who plays the guitar or drums as long as the money train keeps rolling it’s all good.  The revolving door that has become KISS is a joke, and the same can be said for Deep Purple and their 20 different members.  This is Guns N Roses all over again, only the act is old and tired (on multiple levels).  Apparently aging rockers think it’s cool to piss on the establishment.  They love going all Johnny Rotten circa 1977 thinking it will give them that “edge”.  However consider the source, old rockers in makeup that play for teenage boys and the dungeons and dragons crowd.  It’s not edgy.  It’s not rock and roll.  It’s actually pretty pathetic.

tumblr_kz4o3rXrqm1qz8ui7o1_500Accept the honor Gene, it’s going to boost record sales for a couple days when everyone buys the greatest hits cd to rediscover their youth.  God knows you worship the almighty dollar selling out to the highest bidder any chance you get.  You said it’s for the fans.  Well, stop being a dick then and play 3 songs.  Play 15 minutes for the fans with the original lineup.  The lineup that is the real KISS.  The lineup that had the hits everyone can recognize from the first riff.  I just don’t understand a hatred or contempt that can’t be overlooked for 15 stupid minutes of your life to play for “the fans” and have a crowd in awe of seeing something special one last time.

I truly think the Rock Hall needs to get with these bands before they get the nod and have a conversation something like this.  “Paul, Gene, we want to induct you into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Here’s what we want.  You play 3 songs with Ace and Peter in makeup and you get the greatest honor in rock and roll.  Can you agree to those terms? (Paul and Gene say no, and something about being artists blah blah blah)  Well, okay thanks for your time.  That was your only chance.”  <click>  That’ it.  You knew damn well being inducted they were inducting the original lineup.  Why does it come as a shock when people want to see that happen?  Where is the outrage over the Ankh Warrior dammit!!!!

  1. I agree with a lot of what you say here and I disagree with a lot of what you say here. Everything about Kiss supposedly being for the fans, but can’t give 15 minutes to do 3 songs with the original members, you’re absolutely right. However, about them spawning Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys…come on, really? The Beatles had a much bigger hand in creating the Backstreet Boys than Kiss. The Beatles were the original boy band. They were just able to grow out of it quickly and do something meaningful. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking the Beatles at all. I love the Beatles. Anyway, back to Kiss. A revolving door…maybe. But there’s been some damn good musicians in the band from Eric Carr to Bruce Kulick to Cleveland’s own Eric Singer. My personal opinion is that the Rock Hall should have included all member (and for all bands). Like it or not, even the unpopular members of bands had their place in their bands’ histories…Gary Cherone included. Had the Rock Hall included all members, we’d be seeing a different dynamic of who’s going to play and who isn’t…it still may not make all fans happy, but there would be something. Overall, Kiss absolutely 100% deserves to be inducted (especially over “rock” acts like Daryll Hall and John Oates, Madonna, Abba…I think you see where I’m going). • I couldn’t agree more with what you have said here. I of course wanted to fan the flames with the Spice Girls garbage. I think all members should be included as well. That being said, I am a sucker for seeing the original lineups more than anything. I know some feelings get hurt a little and it has to be hard to deal with telling your current lineup to step back for a minute so we can do this one off. I would hope as musicians and fans they would want to see that lineup as well.
